A 26-year-old Harlingen woman is behind bars after attacking a family with a tire iron.

Harlingen police arrested Melissa Gonzalez on several criminal charges Tuesday night.

Gonzalez is accused of using a tire iron to smash out the windows of a car off North 25th Street between Loop 499 and East Palm Drive.

Police told Action 4 News that Gonzalez punched a 29-year-old man and hit him with the tire iron when he tried to take it away from her.

Investigators said shattered glass fell on a 6-month-old baby and 2-year-old child inside the car causing several cuts.

The man left the area to find police.

A motive in the attack was not released but officers told Action 4 News that they found Gonzalez on the 3900 block of Bourbon Street.

Gonzalez appeared before Harlingen Municipal Court Judge Travis Bence on Wednesday morning.

Jail records show she was charged with two counts of injury to a child, criminal mischief, and Class A misdemeanor assault.

Judge Bence gave Gonzalez $22,000 dollars in bonds.
