HIDALGO COUNTY -- It happened after midnight on Friday.
Veronica Guerra said she heard noises outside of her home and went to investigate.
That is when she saw two armed men trying to get into her home.
Guerra said she ran to her bedroom.
Once the men were inside they started to shoot at Guerra's bedroom door and hit her 11-year-old son.
Luckily, her son was not seriously injured--he was, however, able to grab a rifle and shot one of the men in the neck.
Now, Jaime Santana and Fernando Padilla, both of Mexico, are in jail for attempted murder and aggravated robbery.
Another suspect, Jose Luis Ortega, who Hidalgo County Sheriff investigators said was shot by the 11-year-old, remains in a San Antonio hospital
"Mr. Ortega is heavily sedated and is unconscious due to the medication and by law we cannot arraign him until he is conscience," said Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño.
Once that happens, Sheriff Treviño said Ortega will be charged with attempted murder and aggravated robbery.
"Whenever he is medically cleared he'll be transported back to Hidalgo County," said Treviño.
Treviño said his department has seen at least four other home invasions where the ringleaders--like Ortega--hire people who do not know one another.
He said, by doing this, it is hard to make an arrest.
"What Mr. Ortega and other ringleaders are doing is building firewalls--obstacles between their own groups in case they get arrested they don't identify each other by name," said Trevino.
Luckily, in this case, both Santana and Padilla were able to identify Ortega as the ringleader of this home invasion.
Sheriff Treviño tells Action 4 news they are going to initiate a new unit called the Tactical Patrol....it will be a first responder SWAT and first in South Texas.
The team will be on the streets ready to respond to emergencies like home invasions.
