Authorities are telling visitors to South Padre Island and other area beaches to keep their dogs out of the water.

The Gulf of Mexico is still experiencing a poisonous red tide algae bloom that has been blamed for fish kills over the last few weeks.

Authorities are warning dog owners that they have found dead coyotes on Padre Island near Corpus Christi.

Sick coyotes have also been reported on Cameron County beaches.

It’s believed the coyotes were poisoned after eating fish killed by the red tide.

A local task force is urging people not to take their four-legged friends to Cameron County beaches until further notice.
