Two former employees with the Willacy County District Attorney’s Office have filed a federal lawsuit against several public officials.
Marte C. Guillen and Ofelia Guerrero were accused of stealing more than $200,000 dollars in public funds in early 2007.
Charges against the two were dismissed in October 2008.
The two allege they had their jobs for years but the charges were filed against them to discredit former District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra, who was also indicted in a separate case and ultimately lost his seat.
Guillen and Guerrero filed their lawsuit in Brownsville’s federal court on Tuesday morning.
Court records show the two women sued:
• Willacy County
• City of Raymondville
• Former County Judge Simon Salinas
• Raymondville Police Chief Uvaldo Zamora
• Special Prosecutor Mervyn Mosbacker
• Special Prosecutor Gustavo Garza
• Former Grand Jury Foreperson Mary Alice Diaz Chandler
The two women claim they were unable to find work because of the charges.
They are seeking damages for defamation of character, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution and emotional harm.
