CAMERON COUNTY, TEXAS -- Starting Monday, October 12, a trip from La Feria to Primera will cost you less than 2 bucks.
For the first time, the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council will offer bus routes from city to city.
Valley Transit Company spokesperson, Jesus Saenz, said this has been in the making for about two years.
“That was our goal to give the citizens access to medical facilities, shopping facilities, educational institutions, so that’s why this service is coming about," said Saenz.
Saenz also said commuters have been asking for this kind of bus service, and after talks with community leaders and money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, they can now help people get where they need to go.
"We want to have something that’s reliable,” said Saenz. “That our citizens can rely on, that’s dependable, and that’s the main thing.”
That service will offer two different bus routes, for instance the Cameron West route will go from La Feria up to Santa Rosa, to Primera then finally make a stop at the VTC station in Harlingen.
Since the budget is limited, they will be using older buses and won’t offer sheltered bus stops.
"It is going to take some time and it can be anywhere from the middle or the end of next year, where we will be able to acquire new vehicles and bus stops," said Saenz.
He added that depending on the success of this service, they may add more routes.
