HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS -- A candidate for Texas governor gained more support Tuesday in his bid for office.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Schieffer has earned endorsements from nine lawmakers from the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas.

His supporters include Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa of McAllen and Representatives Veronica Gonzales of McAllen, Ryan Guillen of Rio Grande City and Armando "Mando" Martinez of Weslaco.

"I believe that Texas is in need of a change," said Rep. Martinez.  "I believe we need somebody who is going to focus on education and on the necessities of the people who are unemployed and need to find work.  We need to focus back on our communities and most importantly healthcare."

Schieffer, a Fort Worth native and businessman, was only 25 when he was elected in 1972 to his first term in the Texas House of Representatives.
