PHARR, TEXAS -- The community showed up in full support of feeding the hungry in Pharr Thursday.

Nearly a thousand people showed up for Empty Bowls 2009, which is organized by the Food Bank RGV.

The annual fundraiser helps feed the needy.

The food bank gave away bowls as a reminder that there are many families with empty bowls in the Rio Grande Valley.

"It is very exciting and the community really comes out for this," said Food Bank Executive Director Terri Drefke.  "It's a great event that really showcases our community and supports the food bank and our mission of feeding the hungry here at home."

Organizers said they raised more than $50,000.

Action 4 Sports Reporter Darren Haynes provided the entertainment as the Master of Ceremony.
