A Los Indios post office employee and another woman are behind bars after being arrested for their alleged roles in a marijuana by mail scheme.
U.S. Postal Inspection Service agents and Cameron County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested Eva Zamora and Juan Pesina-Sierra on Tuesday afternoon.
A federal grand jury indicted the two women and another man identified as Jose Antonio Sanchez earlier this month.
The are accused of being part of a marijuana by mail scheme believed to have sent more than 250 pounds of marijuana in the mail between December 2008 and July 2009.
Zamora was identified as a 45-year-old San Benito resident who worked at the Los Indios Post Office.
Pesina-Sierra was identified as a 54-year-old Los Indios woman.
Sanchez remains a fugitive in the case but is identified as a 29-year-old San Benito resident.
Zamon and Pesina-Sierra remained in custody on Wednesday afternoon appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Felix Recio a few hours earlier
Federal prosecutors said the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is increasing its efforts to protect the mail from being used by drug traffickers and other abuse.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service will pay up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals who use the U.S. Mail to distribute narcotics.
