SANTA ROSA, TEXAS -- A Santa Rosa man who escaped from police turned himself in Monday.
Miguel Ramirez, 35, escaped from custody on Friday at the city jail and surrendered after three days on the run.
According to Santa Rosa police chief Xavier Martinez, Ramirez promised to surrender Monday morning.
In exchange, Chief Martinez agreed he would only charge Ramirez with the crime for which he was originally arrested - Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon.
"He was carrying a 9mm at a store where he was trying to sell it to passers by," explained Chief Martinez. "One of our citizens witnessed it and they called the police department."
However, Chief Martinez said Ramirez hired a lawyer and waited several hours longer to give himself up.
In the end, authorities added the Unlawful Escape charge.
"Now, we're booking him, fingerprinting him, photographing him and getting him ready for arraignment."
Ramirez will be charged with two felonies that each carry up to 10 years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
"I've known this individual for the last 10 years and that's why I was surprised that he ran away," said Chief Martinez.
Action 4 News has learned Ramirez is employed with the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District as a Special Education teacher's aide.
Chief Martinez said the educator only has one prior DWI in Santa Rosa.
"We've never considered him as 'dangerous' because we've known him. It was just a matter of turning himself in."
Ramirez will be arraigned Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Olmito.
