WESLACO, TEXAS -- The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Citrus Center in Weslaco has received support in the form of $400,000.

The money is an investment award granted by the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.

The project will secure 1,900 jobs and provide the center with more resources.

"The industry has a potential for growth, so there could be more jobs in the future," explained Dr. John De Garca, Director of the TAMUK Citrus Center.  "It's really good news that the EDA has found the funds to fund this program."

The investment by the EDA will also fund the construction of insect-resistant green houses, which protect the citrus crop from insects that could cause severe damage.
