UTB-TSC campus police continue to patrol the southern part of the school after Border Patrol agents called off a search a fugitive who swam across the Rio Grande from Matamoros.
The school reported on its website that a man shot at a Mexican police officer and was last seen swimming across the Rio Grande and fleeing near a golf course next to campus.
Border Patrol agents called off their search around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
But UTB officials reported on their website that campus police are still patrolling the southern area of campus.
This man is described as a Hispanic having a fully-grown beard. He is to be considered armed and dangerous.
The school sent an alert to students advising them to be aware of their surroundings and take necessary precautions.
Campus police officers continue to patrol the Fort Brown Memorial Golf Course, the Education and Business Complex, the Recreation, Education and Kinesiology Center, the Physical Plant and the American Legion.
An earlier advisory asked students to avoid the golf course area until further notice, If at all possible.
Reports from Matamoros:
The Hoy Tamaulipas newspaper reported that the fugitive took a suitcase full of money from a many leaving a Bancomer bank in downtown Matamoros.
The newspaper reported that the alleged thief pulled out a gun and fired at police officer Javier Mendez Soto during a chase.
Witnesses told authorities they heard at least four shots.
Hoy Tamaulipas reported that Mendez remains hospitalized after a 38-caliber bullet entered his left shoulder and became lodged in his spine.
The shooting prompted a mass mobilzation but the suspect managed to make it to the Rio Grande where he swam across in to the United States.
it's not clear if the briefcase filled with money was recovered or not.
