Texas officials are warning the public about a phony telemarketing sweepstakes where scam artists are posing as Federal Trade Commission workers.

The Texas Attorney General's Office on Wednesday issued an advisory warning of the scheme.

The statement says callers tell recipients that they must pay several thousand dollars for insurance before they can receive a certified check for the prize.

The AG's office says an initial call, followed by a letter, falsely try to present the scam as being legitimate.

Texans who get a call from a bogus FTC representative should contact the Texas Attorney General Office or the Federal Trade Commission.
