HARLINGEN, TEXAS -- Harlingen police arrested a Rio Grande Valley man early Tuesday morning because he allegedly tried to rob a store with some pliers.

Police said John Hallett walked into the Stripes convenience store on U.S. 77 and threatened to kill the store clerk unless he handed over the money in the register.

Hallett claimed he had a gun under his shirt, but when the clerk looked closer, he saw the alleged weapon was a pair of pliers.

Police arrested Hallett at the scene.
