A 5-year-old Brownsville boy is recovering after being injured in a hit-and-run accident.
Brownsville police told Action 4 News Luis Alberto Alvarado driving on Simon Place Street when he tried to avoid something on the road.
Alvarado allegedly veered right into the 5-year-old boy while he was standing on the grass outside a home.
Brownsville Police Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique said Alvarado hit the child running over the boy’s legs.
"People see this happening they even hear the driver yelling at them saying, ‘Get this kid off the road’ but the kid wasn't on the road and obviously he didn't stop he kept going,” Manrrique said.
Alvarado fled the scene but didn’t make it very far.
Police arrested Alvarado and charged him with failure to stop and render aid and causing injury.
Police said the boy suffered injuries to both ankles.
