MCALLEN, TEXAS -- Members of the Southwest Workers' Union staged a demonstration Thursday to call for democracy, justice and dignity for the people of Honduras following a military coup.

The demonstration took place outside the Armed Forces Recruitment Center in McAllen.

Members said the coup, which forcefully removed President Manuel Zelaya from office, was barbaric.

Zelaya was exiled to Costa Rica and replaced by Roberto Michelleti.

"The United States has a history of supporting military coups in Latin America, and we're sending a message to the United States government and to President Barack Obama that this is the way we have to change history," explained Anayanse Garza with the SWU.  "Instead of training soldiers to kill women and children in Latin America, what we need to do is go to the streets and demand justice, democracy and liberty."

President Obama has said the government of Michelletti is illegitimate.

The SWU has asked President Obama to go further and cut off all aid to Honduras until Zelaya is reinstated.
