Plans to build a bus terminal in downtown Brownsville got a big boost from the federal government on Wednesday.

Brownsville officials were awarded $3 million in stimulus funds to build the downtown bus terminal.

U.S. Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz announced the award on Wednesday morning.

The $3,631,569 dollar grant will be given to the Brownsville Urban System (BUS) to build a bus terminal that will link city buses with those going to destinations across Texas, the United States and Mexico.

“The multimodal terminal will be a huge asset to the community,” Ortiz said in a prepared statement. “It will facilitate mass transportation in the region by providing a central location that will improve connections for local, regional, state, and international modes of ground transportation services.”
