Pirates Defeat Poteet 2-0 In 4A Title Game

GEORGETOWN -- Bertin Hernandez scored on a curving 30-yard shot and Hidalgo won its first state title with a 2-0 victory against Mesquite Poteet in the Class 4A boys soccer championship Saturday.

Hernandez, the championship game MVP, put Hidalgo (17-3-6) ahead 13:22 into the first half. Jesus Mireles added a goal on a penalty kick in the final seconds of the match.

The penalty kick came after the goalie for Poteet (22-5-3) was given a red card from a confrontation with an Hidalgo forward. One other player from each team also received a red card as tempers flared in the final seconds.

It was the second trip to the state tournament for Hidalgo, which lost on a shootout in the 2007 semifinals.
