MCALLEN -- The Mcallen Economic Development Corporation is working to get an auto manufacturer to build an assembly plant in the Rio Grande Valley.
But the group might soon have financial help from the State of Texas.
The Rio Grande Guardian reported on Monday that Texas State Rep. Veronica Gonzales (D-McAllen) is planning to file a bill that would provide state funding to communities working to attract an auto maker.
Gonzales' bill targets $50 million dollars set aside in Gov. Rick Perry's Texas Enterprise Fund.
If Gonzales' bill is passed into law Gov. Perry would have the discretion as to which communities receive the $50 million.
Gonzales told The Guardian that she is hopeful the bill will be passed under House Speaker Joe Straus' leadership team this session.
Last week, Straus named Gonzales as chair of the House Border and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee.
