AUSTIN, TEXAS -- State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa announced promising news on Wednesday

He says the Texas Department of Transportation has found a funding source to fix four bottleneck areas along U.S. Highway .281.

Our media partner the Rio Grande Guardian spoke to the senator in person.

Hinojosa said when the projects at Falfurrias, Premont, Ben Bolt and George West are complete, Highway 281 will be up to interstate standards.

"It is very important for us in the Rio Grande Valley because of NAFTA and all the goods that come across the border," explained Hinojosa.  "Now, we'll be able to speed up the commerce.  That will be a great boost for the economy of the Rio Grande Valley."

The chairman of the Texas Transportation Commission said the projects are 'shovel ready' and qualify for economic stimulus money.

The total cost of the four projects is $197 million.
