Two Rio Grande Valley lawmakers want to give Texas liquor stores a chance to sell liquor on Sundays.

Texas State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa and State Representative Veronica Gonzales have filed a bill that would allow liquor sales from noon to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

If the bill is enacted, Gonzales says it would allow border county liquor stores to compete with Mexico's stores.

"This is just a way to make sure that our money is kept on our side of the border for liquor sales," Gonzales said.  "We love people from Mexico, but we want our money spent locally."

Currently, Sunday sales of beer and wine are permitted, but alcohol can only be sold by the drink at restaurants and bars.
