Matamoros truck driver arrested for smuggling $18 million of cocaine

MATAMOROS -- A Matamoros truck driver is behind bars after he allegedly tried to smuggled $18 million worth of cocaine into the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents said they arrested Rigoberto Zuniga Mata on federal drug charges on Tuesday night.

Customs officers said the 32-year-old truck driver drove up to the Veterans International Bridge in an 18-wheeler at 8:13 p.m. Tuesday.

Zuniga was carrying a commercial shipment of cantera stone but officers notices something wrong with one of twelve pallets in the cargo hold.

An inspection revealed 403 packages inside the stone.

Customs officers said the packages contained nearly 560 pounds of cocaine worth almost $18 million dollars.

Zuniga was arrested an remains in custody while U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents continue to investigate the case.
