Marcos Cedilla is one of many left puzzled after gunshots ring out near his Brownsville apartment complex.

Like so many others at the Borders Apartments off Media Luna, Cedilla is concerned after somebody was shot during a party.

“It’s not very safe out there anymore," Cedilla said.

Brownsville police said Alex Mendoza arrived home early Friday morning only to find strangers inside.

Mendoza chased the partygoers ou but one guest identified as Bruno Leal wasn’t happy about having to leave and allegedly pulled out a gun.

Brownsville Police Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique said the incident ended with Mendoza being shot.

“He began a verbal argument with Leal, went outside and for no other apparent reason used a weapon and shot at Alex," Manrrique said.

Cedillo told Action 4 News that heard the shooting.

“We come out and we see a whole bunch of commotion and a car taking of real fast and that's when we saw that the guy had been shot and laid right over there," he said.

Police have not yet established a motive for the shooting meanwhile the victim remains hospitalized.

The investigation continues but Cedillo hopes his neighbor will recover from what he calls a "senseless" shooting.

"I know him by 'Red'," Cedilla said of Mendoza. "I see him around and I shake his hand. Like about two days ago I was playing basketball at the courts."

Cedilla said he highly doubts that Mendoza ignited the conflict.

“Every time I see him around here he shakes my hand, pretty cool guy with me," Cedilla said.
