Authorities are investigating who was behind the wheel during a drug chase that ended with the suspect's vehicle catching on fire.

It all started off Tower Road and Military Highway south of Alamo around 6 p.m. Friday.

U.S. Border Patrol agents spotted a black Pontiac Grand Prix leaving the Rio Grande River with what appeared to be drugs.

The driver lead authorities on a chase down Military Highway but gave Border Patrol agents the slip off FM 1015.

Progreso police found the suspect vehicle on fire in a field near Sky Soldier Road and Homer Avenue.

Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire, which investigators believe was caused by hot brakes coming into contact with dry grass.

The driver had fled the scene but Border Patrol agents were able to recover at least six bundles with 350 pounds of marijuana from the burnt wreck.

The chase comes less than a month after another chase where a drug chase in Progreso where the suspect vehicle caught a sugar cane field on fire.
