An Hidalgo County Sheriff deputy is shot multiple times while responding a call.

Around 5:30pm Sunday evening, the sheriff’s department received a 9-1-1 call concerning a kidnapping in the area of FM 2812 and Val Verde just Northeast of Edinburg.

Two deputies in two different patrol units were flagged down by people in the area.  They pointed out a brown pick up truck that had an alleged kidnap victim inside.

One deputy questioned the driver, while the other stood watch over the occupants in the vehicle.

Sheriff Trevino told Action 4 News without notice one of the suspects in a brown pick-up truck jumped out opening fire on the deputy shooting him twice in the chest and once in the abdomen.

The Sheriff said the bullet that struck the deputy in the abdomen went in, came out and went back in.

The deputy’s name is still being withheld from the media at this time.

The Sheriff did confirm the deputy will undergo surgery early in the morning.

Trevino said the deputies fired back killing the gunman whose name has not been released.

The driver of the truck was shot by cross-fire in the head and body.

According to the Sheriff, the suspect kidnap victim also sustained a gunshot wound to his hand.

The Sheriff said there was a third suspect in the pick-up.

He is considered a witness and was taken in for questioning.

Sheriff Lupe Trevino believes this entire ordeal all started over a drug deal gone bad.

He told Action 4 News one group approached a seller to purchase drugs.

The buyers reportedly attempted to steal from the sellers which lead to the alleged kidnapping.

Late Sunday, the SWAT Team executed two warrants at two homes in the area confiscating drugs and arresting at least two people.

The investigation continued late into Sunday night.

More arrests are expected.
