La Feria police will be charging a San Benito man with filing a false report.

According to Chief Don Garcia, 21-year-old Jesus Mata of San Bento allegedly lied about being robbed at gun point early Wednesday morning.

Garcia says Mata walked into their police department in tears claiming he was boxed in by the drivers of two trucks while at the corner of White Ranch Road and the frontage road of Expressway 83.

He says the men pulled out guns and took his money, while he was on his way to pick up money from the game rooms he worked at.

Chief Garcia says they called in resources from the Cameron County Sheriff's Department and Harlingen Police Department to help find the suspects, who Mata claimed were armed with assault rifles.

But police say as they continued to investigate his claims, something didn't add up.

They called Mata back in for more questioning and that's when Chief Garcia says he confessed to making up the story.

He told detectives that he spent over a $1,000 dollars at the Whisper's Gentlemen's Club in neighboring Harlingen on lap dances and strippers.

Mata said he feared his wife would be upset, so he fabricated the story.
