The city of Santa Rosa is hoping to begin a new community tradition aimed at caring for the needy in their community.

In a joint effort, the Santa Rosa United Methodist Church, the city and the school district brought in an amateur football team to play for charity.

The entry fee will be donated to the newly created Santa Rosa food bank.

Only in its third month, the food bank runs one food drop a month and is already struggling to stay afloat.

“In December we fed 84 families,” Santa Rosa Police Chief Xavier Martinez said. “January it jumped to 124. We just foresee as the community realizes we have the food bank, our city has gotten a lot of calls about needing the service so we are expecting more so this is one way to make sure we can fund it."

If you would like to make a monetary donation you can do so at the Santa Rosa Police Department.
