Saturday marks the 11th anniversary of the Queen Isabella Causeway collapse.

A 240-foot section of the causeway collapsed just four days after the 9/11 attacks.

A tugboat pushing four barges steered the load into a concrete support column.

The 2 a.m. accident caused six cars to drive into the gap of the bridge and fall 85 feet. Eight people died and three survived.

The victims were Robert Harris, 46, Hector Martinez,32, Barry Welch, 53, Chelsea Welch, 23, all from Port Isabel; Julio Mireles, 23 of Los Fresnos, Robin Leavell, 29 of Mercedes, Stevan Rivas, 22, of Humble and Gaspar Hinojosa, 52, of Kingsville.

The survivors were Rene Mata of Port Isabel and Gustavo Morales and Bridgett Goza of Brownsville.

A ceremony was held at Port Isabel’s City Hall at 9 a.m. on Saturday to remember the victims.

The ceremony was originally scheduled to take place at the bridge, but had to be moved because of The King of the Causeway bike race.
