Veterans could see a break on property taxes in the Lone Star State, if a proposal by Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos is approved by the Texas Legislature.

Disabled veterans in Cameron County are already tax exempt from property taxes.

But Cascos wants to extend that to all veterans saying it's time to put our money where our mouth is.

Cascos said the proposal has already been put on the county's legislative agenda which will go to state representatives and the senate for review.

He said people always talk about giving back to our troops and veterans ad this is the chance to do that.

Cascos said the property tax break would be for veterans and their surviving spouses.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there are more than 1.7 million veterans in the State of Texas.

Cascos said it's a way to show appreciation for all the sacrifices veterans and their families have made.

"The men and women that not only have served this county and have sacrificed and deferred part of their life to serve in the military the surviving spouse issue comes in because we have many veterans that have lost their lives during different conflicts and wars and this is a way to give their spouses also a tax break because they've suffered a lot more than we have,” Cascos said.

Cascos said there's been no opposition to his proposal.

But even if it’s not approved on a statewide level, he hopes Rio Grande Valley leaders will consider opting into this tax break.

If approved by state law makers, Cascos says the tax break could go into effect as soon as September 1st.
