Great strides have been made in the past few years to bring Hidalgo County’s high, double digit unemployment rate into the single digits.

But one move or lack thereof by Congress could threaten to change all of that.

"The support service to help those that are most in need, so they can become self sufficient adults will be hit the hardest with this sequester, Workforce Solutions CEO Bonnie Gonzalez said. “That is most unfortunate for this community of ours."

Gonzalez said the future of many of their programs, offered to help people get back on their feet, are uncertain at this time.

"I am concerned. I am more concerned about what this means for my community and the services that are so critically important for families."

Workforce Solutions gets about 99 percent of their funding from the federal government.

Which means—services such as childcare, continuing education, and support services could be cut by 8 percent.

While these programs will still be offered--they would be scaled back.

Despite all of that Gonzalez said they will continue to operate and provide services-- even if that means on a tighter budget.
