Sometimes the best man for the job is a woman.

Rhonda Rubio has been cutting men's hair for 27 years.

The San Benito native has cut hair in Texas and Arizona.

But Rubio now has a unique barber shop set up on North 10th Street in McAllen.

“It's a man's cave,” Rubio said. “And all my clients have participated in the way that it looks."

The result is unique collection ranging from the rustic to the quirky.

All of it creating a Texas and country music themed barber shop.

Rubio offers complimentary drinks to customers but also a straight-edge razor shave and hot towel.

“It's a lost art,” Rubio said about the barber’s shave. “I don't think it's known anymore for a barber shop to be specializing in that."

Rubio has a Facebook fan page but otherwise doesn't advertise.

Nonetheless, she has built up a base of loyal clients.

Many of them are like Roy Balderas Jr. from Edinburg who heard about her through word of mouth.

“A couple friends of mine came in and they recommended it and I've been coming here ever since,” Balderas said.

But Balderas isn't alone.

County music stars Aaron Watson and Kevin Fowler have both dropped by her McAllen shop for a haircut.

But her clients also include Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño, local judges and city and county commissioners.

Rubio said maybe one day she'd like to expand, but for now the “100 percent cowgirl" is happy cutting men's hair in her shop.

“They're just not as complicated as women,” Rubio said. “I have always liked it."
