A Cameron County jury sentenced a La Paloma man to 40 years in prison for the death of a baby who died from malnutrition.

Jurors in the 404th State District Court found Abraham Proenza guilty last week of injury of a child.

Cameron County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested Proenza back in August 2008 for the death of Baby Aiden Valdez.

Prosecutors said Baby Aiden was starved to death and the only thing found in the boy's stomach was an undigested jalapeño.

Testimony for Proenza's sentencing started last week and continued on Tuesday morning.

Jurors handed down their 40-year sentence just before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
