American criminals fleeing across the border to avoid prosecution is not unheard of, but those same fugitives swimming back, is unusual.
But that's exactly what Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said 58-year-old suspected murderer, Roy Rogers Soliz, did.
The man allegedly shot his estranged wife’s boyfriend, 38-year-old Christopher Carson, outside a Pflugerville business, then fled to Matamoros, Mexico.
The shooting happened on Jan. 25, Lucio said, and the wife was not injured.
U.S. Border Patrol agents in the southmost area of Brownsville, spotted Soliz sitting under a tree Thursday.
When they questioned him, he told agents he is an American then went on to give an unlikely story.
"(He said) he had paid $500 to get somebody to cross him illegally, and the reason he gave was that he wanted to see how (illegal immigrants) were doing it," Lucio said.
The Travis County Sheriff’s Department will have 10 days to pick-up Soliz from the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center and take him to Austin to face murder charges.
