Authorities have identified two gang members accused of firing an AK-47 and a handgun at a home where members of a rival gang had gathered for a New Year's Eve party.
It all happened at a home on San Angelo Street in the Little Mexico neighborhood south of Alamo around 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies reported that 21-year-old Miguel Angel Padilla died from gunshot wounds he received during the shooting.
Investigators said members of the Po Boys street gang were at a New Year's Eve party in one house while members of the rival South Side Bandidos street gang were at a party at home across the street.
An argument allegedly ended with Po Boys members Jose Alex Garcia and Daniel Cruz firing on the house where the South Side Bandidos had gathered.
Witnesses told deputies that Garcia was firing an AK-47 while Cruz was firing a handgun.
The bullets hit Padilla, who deputies said was an associate of the South Side Bandidos. Padilla later died at McAllen Medical Center.
Investigators reported that deputies were able to get enough evidence to get warrants for murder charges.
Sheriff Lupe Treviño told Action 4 News that feud between the South Side Bandidos and Po Boys has emerged in the Little Mexico neighborhood, which has already seen much gang-related violence.
"The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office outreach programs continue reaching out to the younger age children, parents, and community activists educating them about the dangers of the gang lifestyle," Sheriff Treviño said. "In unison, our gang enforcement units will continue to crack down on illegal gang activity throughout Hidalgo County through pro-active legal measures."
