Harlingen firefighters spent New Year's Day battling a fire at an abandoned structure on the city's northside.

According to fire officials, the blaze started early this morning underneath the foundation of what was once the HEB building near North H Street and Fair Park.

Fire investigators are not sure what sparked the flames, but have been working on putting out hot spots.

No other structures in the area are being threatened.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
