A bill that would create a medical school in the Rio Grande Valley has passed its third and final reading in the Texas House of Representatives.

House Bill 1000 had a third reading in the Texas State Capitol on Wednesday morning.

The bill, which would merge UTPA and UTB and create a medical school, unanimoulsy passed the reading.

According to Texas State Rep. Eddie Lucio III (D-San Benito), the bill must go the Texas Senate.

A companion bill unanimously passed the Texas State Senate last week but it must be reconciled with the House bill.

Texas State Rep. Rene Oliveira (D-Brownsvile issued a statement about the bill passing the House of Representatives.

"We still have some procedural hurdles to clear, but we have been moving quickly and positively through the process," Oliveira said in the statement. "House and Senate members in both parties have stepped up to the plate to do the right thing."
