HOUSTON, TX -- Senior guards Jesus DelgadoBrandon Provost and Aaron Urbanus and junior forward Justin Leathers all reached double-figures in scoring, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men’s basketball team fell to the University of Houston Cougars 96-71 on Thursday at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Urbanus led the way with 14 points and five assists. Delgado scored 12 points. Leathers scored 10 points with seven rebounds while Provost also scored 10 points. The Broncs (7-10) shot 50.9 percent (29-for-57) from the field, including 36.8 percent (7-for-19) from behind the arc while going 6-for-9 from the foul line.

Five Cougars (11-2) reached double-figures in scoring as well, led by Joseph Young who scored a game-high 25 points while hitting five of the Cougars’ 11 three-pointers. J.J. Thompson and Danuel House scored 12 points each. TaShawan Thomas and Jherrod Stiggers scored 10 points each. The Cougars shot 53.3 percent (32-for-60) from the field, including 54.2 percent (13-for-24) from behind the arc while going 15-for-20 from the foul line.

The Broncs took an early lead, going up 7-4 on a three-pointer by Urbanus. The Cougars responded with a 7-0 run to take an 11-7 lead on a Thompson three-pointer at the 15:23 mark. Another three by Urbanus brought the Broncs back with one, but three-pointers by Young and Brandon Morris sandwiched a Delgado layup as the Cougars pushed their lead to 17-12.

The Broncs again got close, pulling within two on a Provost three-pointer, but the Cougars used 11 second chance points on five offensive rebounds over the next 10 minutes to fuel a 23-9 run and take a 40-24 lead.

Delgado hit three jumpers over the final 3:02 of the first half as the Broncs went on a 12-2 run to pull within 42-36.

Delgado scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting in the first half.

Leathers opened the second half with a layup to extend the Broncs’ run to 14-2 and make it 42-38, but a one-hand reverse slam by Thomas end the run. The game stayed tight for the first seven minutes of the half, with the Broncs staying within 53-47 on a Josh Cleveland dunk, but the Cougars went on a 19-9 run over the next five minutes to take a 72-56 lead.
