Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa just returned to Brownsville from a trip to Lubbock and what he witnessed while he was there has him extremely concerned.

"This kind of conduct is unacceptable in the year 2012," Hinojosa said. "They are writing racist statements on the signs using the "N" word, putting mustard on them and shooting at the signs and then putting them back."

The "N" word can be seen written several times in black marker on "Lubbock Supports Obama" signs throughout the city.

One in particular is riddled with offensive graffiti and Hinojosa says when the precinct chairperson in Lubbock attempted to record the alleged vandals on his cell phone he was attacked.

"They assaulted him and started telling him he needed to go back to Mexico and this is a third generation American whose family was born here," Hinojosa said.

Hinojosa told Action 4 News that the Republican Party hasn't condemned the racist vandalism against President Obama and violence toward his supporters.

"The response from the Republican Party in Lubbock before we caught them stealing the signs said this is probably a democratic ploy to get attention," he said.

Hidalgo County's Republican Party Chairman Javier Villalobos spoke to Action 4 News about the indident.

"This incident is not representative of the Republican Party",  and, "both parties should show respect to each other," Villalobos said.

Hinojosa believes the racism is being tolerated and sometimes even encouraged by the leaders of the party.

"These are the kind of things that are allowed to happen because the Republican Party is unwilling to police it's own ranks and take a stand against racism," Hinojosa said.

Lubbock police tell Action 4 News that the suspects were detained and questioned after the incident but no arrests have been made pending an ongoing investigation.
