A warm and humid start to the morning will give way to a significant wind event for the Rio Grande Valley and extreme Western Ranchlands.

A cold front will move through the area in the morning hours of Monday, ushering in much drier air and windy conditions.

In fact, the National Weather Service has already issued a Red Flag Warning for Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy, and Kenedy counties, and High Wind Advisory for Brooks, Jim Hogg, Starr, and Zapata counties, effective 9 a.m. through 8 p.m.

A tight pressure gradient associated with an advancing upper level low pressure system will causing winds to respond with very windy conditions.

Expect winds sustained at 35-40 mph, with some gusts of 45-50 mph or greater possible.

The wind, in combination with reduced relative humidity of less than 20%, and dry brush conditions due to drought, will create high fire weather danger for the area.

As a result, any controlled burning scheduled for today should be canceled.

In addition, the wind will create significant problems for high profile vehicles traveling the roadways.

Any loose items, such as trash cans or lawn furniture, should be tied down as these could blow over easily onto streets and create hazards.

The winds should relax by the late evening hours and temperatures will tumble rather rapidly with the colder air and clear skies in place.
