A former federal agent found himself on the other side of law after being accused of falsifying records in an investigation against a customs officer.

Authorities filed a criminal information in Brownsville's federal court against former U.S. Department of Homeland Security agent Wayne Elgin Ball.

Ball is accused of conspiracy to falsify records in a federal investigation and to obstruct justice in an agency proceeding.

Court records show that Ball worked as an agent with Homeland's Security's Office of the Inspector General in McAllen between January 2009 and November 2012.

The office is set up to oversee investigations of Border Patrol and customs officers accused of wrongdoing but an audit allegedly revealed an number of irregularities in the their paperwork.

Among the irregularities was one case involving an investigation of customs officer accused of helping drug and immigrant smugglers.

According to the criminal information, Ball's supervisor allegedly had another agent fill out false reports about the investigation.

The supervisor allegedly had Ball sign and back date the reports.

No court date has been set but records show that Ball could face up to five years in federal prison, if convicted.

Attempts to reach Ball at his north McAllen home were not successful.
