A federal grand jury has indicted four law enforcement officers arrested as part of the "Panama Unit" scandal.

Grand jurors met in McAllen on Wednesday and returned a six-count federal drug trafficking indictment against them.

Jonathan Treviño, Alexis Rigoberto Espinoza, Fabian Rodriguez and Gerardo Mendoza-Duran are accused of escorting drug loads.

All four men are out on bond but were arrested as part of an undercover operation that ended in December.

The Panama Unit was a drug task force created to fight street-level drug dealers in Mission and western Hidalgo County.

The indictment charges all four men with one count of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine.

Espinoza and Duran are charged with four of the five counts of cocaine possession while Treviño and Rodriguez were indicted on the other.

All four are expected back in federal court for arraignment on Thusday, January 17th.

Treviño is the son of Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño and Espinoza is the son of Hidalgo Police Chief Raul Espinoza.
