A Houston man is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after he allegedly tried to smuggle illegal immigrants in downtown Brownsville.

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested 33-year-old Jose Luis Garcia-Barrera on New Year's Eve.

Court records released on Wednesday show that Border Patrol surveillance cameras showed him loading people into his Chevrolet Tahoe.

Border Patrol agents pulled Garcia-Barrera's SUV over off Sam Perl Boulevard and East St. Francis Street.

Investigators learned that his passenger Alexis Edgardo Acevedo-Orozco is an illegal immigrant.

Garcia-Barrera appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Wednesday morning.

Judge Morgan denied bond for Garcia-Barrera until a Monday afternoon hearing.
