Investigators believe a stray bullet may be responsible in the weekend death of a Rio Hondo teen.

Rio Hondo High School senior Ricardo "Ricky" Ramos, Jr. was killed in the shooting accident off FM 106 and FM 803.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio spoke to Action 4 News about the 18-year-old's death.

Sheriff Lucio said a 13-year-old relative was shooting birds with a .22-caliber rifle when one of the bullets hit Ramos.

Lucio said Ramos was inside a house at the time of the shooting.

Ramos died at the Valley Baptist Medical Medical Center in Harlingen around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

No criminal charges have been filled while deputies continue to investigate the accident.

Friends and classmates were leaving their condolences on the teen's Facebook page.

According to his Facebook page, Ramos enjoyed participating in team roping.
