A Hidalgo County father is facing upgraded criminal charges after his 6-year-old son died in the hospital.

Pharr police arrested 31-year-old Pedro Ibarra on an intoxication assault charge on Monday evening.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Ibarra was behind the wheel of a car that rear-ended an 18-wheeler.

The accident happened on the frontage road of U.S. Highway 281 near Nolana Avenue.

Police said Ibarra’s 6-year-old son was trapped inside the car.

Firefighters got the boy out and paramedics rushed him to a local hospital but he died 9:20 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators told Action 4 News that they have filed second-degree felony intoxication manslaughter charges against Ibarra.
