A man was caught trying to cross over $156,000 across the United States, Mexico border.

On Friday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers questioned the driver of a Nissan Xterra at the Hidalgo Port of Entry.

The driver, Juan Araujo-Salas, denied having more than $10,000 on him.

When officers sent his vehicle to a secondary inspection, they discovered the $156,676 in cash.

Nineteen bundles of cash wrapped in cellophane were found in the car’s fuel tank and $1,166 were found on him and in the center console.

Araujo was taken into custody. He told officers that he gave his car to a man in Houston the day before.

Araujo said the man took his car and brought it back to him three hours later. The man told him that there was money hidden inside the car, but he did not know where.

Once he drove the car back from Houston, Araujo said his ultimate destination was Reynosa, where he was going to get $10,000 for driving the car.
