A woman and her 2-year-old brother barely escaped a fire that destroyed their home.

Cameron County Fire Officials responded to the blaze at about 4 p.m. on Friday.

It happened at a home at Rancho Grande East, just outside of San Benito.

The woman was asleep at the time the home caught fire, but the smoke detector alarm woke her up.

The detector ultimately saved her and her brother’s life.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
