An internal investigation has been launched at the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office following the death of an inmate.
Ramiro Castaneda Hernandez was arrested Wednesday at 12:48 a.m. on a traffic violation.
According to reports, he arrived at the county jail at 1:10am, and died more than three hours later.
Sheriff Guadelupe “Lupe” Trevino states the 51-year-old suffered a seizure at the Hidalgo County Jail at 4:19am, and deemed to be responsive.
“Hernandez again collapsed and Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Medical personnel again responded and after evaluation contacted EMS at 4:52a.m.” the Sheriff said.
He was transported to Edinburg Regional Hospital at 5:24 a.m where he was pronounced dead at 5:58a.m by Dr. Lindaman.
“I have ordered internal and criminal investigation by Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Unit” Sheriff Trevino said.
“The Bi-Lateral probe will not be quick, but long and laborious. Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the safety, health, and well being of every person we take into our custody and that is a duty I take very serious.”
