Valleyites plan vigil to remember Sandy Hook victims

The Valley is joining together to honor the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary massacre.

The Valley is joining together to honor the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary massacre.

This week there are several events being hosted to show support for victims, the first responders and their families in Newtown, Connecticut.

Rio Grande City Mayor Ruben Villarreal, along with City Commissioners, the Chamber of Commerce, The Main Street Program and the Boys and Girls Club of RGC will be hosting a candlelight vigil Tuesday night.

It will begin at 6pm at the Gregorio Barrera Plaza in front of the Starr County Courthouse, and the public is invited to attend.

On Wednesday, The Harlingen High School Honor Society is encouraging everyone to wear green and white in honor of the 26 students and teachers tragically killed last Friday.

Green and white are Sandy Hook Elementary school colors.

They encourage all of the Valley and other schools to participate to show their support.

On Friday, December 21st three friends are getting together to host “The Walk 27”.

It will start at 8:30am.

Organizer Lisa Garcia is asking everyone in attendance to wear green and white, and bring a bottle of bubbles with you.

Participants will walk for 27 minutes in memory of the lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary; afterwards bubbles will be blown in memory of the children.
