San Benito police are trying to figure out what led to a weekend stabbing where one man’s fingers were cut off and another was stabbed in the chest.

It all happened on the 200 block of Woodford street in San Benito Friday night.

A 21-year-old and a 23-year-old got into a verbal argument, which escalated to a physical fight and the stabbings.

At this point, police are speaking to witnesses to determine if one or both of the men did the stabbing.

San Benito Police Department Det. Rogelio Banda spoke to Action 4 News about the investigation.

“If one or both parties end up getting charged, depending on what the district attorney recommends,” Banda said. “They might be facing aggravated assault charges because of the fact they used deadly weapons in this case knives so that's the charge they might be looking at.”

Police say that doctors were able to re-attach the 21-year-old's finger.

The 23-year-old is home recovering from stabs to the chest, stomach and back.
