A Brownsville man accused of stabbing his wife spent more than two years on the run but is now behind bars after a Tuesday afternoon traffic stop.

Brownsville police arrested 36-year-old Rigoberto Zuniga on multiple criminal charges early Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Zuniga is accused of stabbing his wife back in January 2010.

The domestic violence stabbing happened on the 100 block of East St. Charles Street leaving the woman with cuts to her legs and hands.

A police officer pulled over Zuniga’s car around 1:12 p.m. Tuesday because he was driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

The officer reported that Zuniga did not have a driver’s license, auto insurance or any other form of identification.

Zuniga allegedly gave a false name but the police officer recognized him.

The officer arrested Zuniga for the past aggravated assault, failure to identify as a fugitive from justice and the traffic violations.

Zuniga remains in custody at the Brownsville City Jail under $75,000 dollars in bonds.
