Civil rights groups are demanding justice for two Guatemalan immigrants killed by gunfire from a state police helicopter during a chase north of La Joya.

Members of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other groups gathered off FM 2221 north of La Joya on Thursday afternoon.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officer Miguel Avila fired from a helicopter down on a pickup truck during a chase.

Guatemalan immigrants Marco Antonio Castro and Jose Leonardo Coj Cumar were among several illegal immigrants in the bed of the truck.

Both were killed as a result of that gunfire.

The shooting remains under review by state officials but civil rights groups are calling the shooting "illegal" and "unconstitutional."
